The Massey

Went and hung the last stand this morning with Dawna. This is the new spot we got permission on by the old home place. I have high hopes for it. It will primarily be Dawna’s spot. Her shoulder is bugging her enough that she cannot climb up into hang on stands, but ladders don’t bother her at all. We went by the other place we have by the old home place we’ve hunted for years. I wanted to take a look at the big plot. A couple does and a fawn were in the plot when we pulled up. About the only thing growing is crab grass and a little chicory. I’m assuming they were after the chicory. I’m hoping the 1/2” rain a few days ago awoke the crab grass enough for a round of clethodim to prep it finally for fall throw and mow. I’m hoping a 3 week wait until throw and mow won’t pose a problem. I’ll ask in the t&m thread. This afternoon we went to the Massey water trees, I almost took some drought related pics, but I’ve done that enough and it’s getting depressing to do so. That said, the brassica plot looks to be a complete failure. One last pic at the end, they cut corn pretty recently at the Massey and I had a free evening yesterday, so I went to the barn for some deer watching. I saw a BUNCH of deer in the cut corn, including one of several bachelor groups that got pretty close to the barnyard. One was a high, tight, heavy 9 that was a for sure shooter. The pic isn’t the best, it was a little too dark to my phone to focus well.

As much as I like that idea, I’m supposed to be getting one for Christmas from my family.:)

Dawna and I headed to the barn this evening and for the second time this week a shooter got within bow range of the barnyard. This buck was BIG. Picture isn’t great, it was pretty dark, but trust me, it doesn’t do him justice. Hoping Dawna can get close to him before he takes off for fall like so many of them do.

Yep, he looks like a bruiser. I hope you guys can get a shot. What kind of cover is he in?
He is standing in a mixture of corn stubble and weeds on the field edge. The fella who farms our ground let weeds get established in his corn 2 years ago and has been battling them ever since. It’s actually a perfect environment for the deer, they browse on the weeds as much as they glean the corn.

Yep, you need to plant some more weeds for that farmer. :D

Went and watered trees again today over at the Massey. I’m not a fan of watering in the middle of the day, but with seasons open now, I can’t risk running deer off our place in the evening, and I’m too lazy to water trees after dark.
Pulled a card while I was there and the camera was dead, so not many pics. This fella looks interesting, I don’t think we have a pic of him yet, looks like he has some impressive brows.

The chestnuts I’m growing from seed from Matt finally took off a couple months ago. The hybrid oak from an acorn from Grandma and Pa’s old yard is looking REALLY good. These will go in the barnyard at the Massey next spring.

Here’s a pic I’ll look back on in the future I’m sure. This is a picture of our backyard here at the house. Keep in mind we have had twice the rain here that we’ve had at the Massey, which isn’t saying much. It’s hard to believe how resilient some of the trees around are, they are definitely more green then you’d think they would be.

Very dry! Our place at Home 10 is getting there and that is where the cattle are...up here on the hollow is slightly better. Rain is greatly needed and I always say the only difference between hero and zero food plot pictures is moisture...

Put up my first rope scrape. I leaned on Don Higgins method after getting a start here. We’ll see what happens, I have a camera on it. Can you see the stand? There are cows on this place, I’m not sure if they’ll mess it up, I hope if they mess with they might make it better??

I have mock scrapes on cattle pasture. You'll get bovine visitors but the deer will still frequent the scrape. No worries!

That's a well hidden stand. It took me a minute to find it.

It’s kind of funny, pictures are deceiving. The stand is 28 yards from the rope, the picture makes it look a lot closer.

Heck I still don’t see it but I’m blind in one eye can’t see out of other. Lol. Cool rope trick I’ve never used but I routinely make scrapes w overhanging branch then peeing in scrape. Always attracts doe and buck.

Heading to the Massey this evening with Dawna, she’s committed to hunting early this year. Maybe she can get one of the bigguns, that will be gone by November, to come by. If we can stay in the tree that is, wind is howling. A windy day used to proceed some weather approaching, not anymore. Only purpose of a windy day in Kansas now is to dry stuff out more (not sure if that’s even possible) and make us miserable.

Good luck tonight!

I put together our Cross Country course this week. Tried to mow it but can't mow low enough to see the path. Used a ton of paint to get it marked. The good news is that if the kids can jump the cracks in the ground it's a hard and fast course. We have a firetruck showing up to spray runners if they want. That'll help with the heat.

Had a fun hunt last night with Dawna, saw too many deer to count. No shots fired from the killing tree, still the only two kills from this tree are armadillos. :D
Picking up 16 bags of winter rye and 6 bags of awnless wheat this afternoon. Told the feed store owner I’d pick them up the end of this week anticipating rain next week. They’ve since killed our chances for rain AGAIN, but I feel I better get the seed picked up to keep it from being poached by a warehouse worker who doesn’t know it’s being held back. I wonder how long it will sit in the barn? In the meantime, I have to small areas I’m going to start over in conventionally, I’ll prolly try to get those done next week and continue to hold off on the t&m. Hope I don’t break the tiller next week. :(

Got 3 of the 4 plots done today that we’re putting in conventionally. Still no rain in long term forecast, but these kind of plots have hung in much better than t&m waiting for rain in my experience. It’s a dust bowl for sure.

This is here at home, the bees are long gone, but decided to put a plot back in for the deer in the back.

Don't know exactly why, but I sure like that tractor! Grandpa stuck my youngest on a tractor for a few minutes yesterday dragging a springtooth. Thankfully there was a breeze, otherwise the dust would have been a lung filler.
