    Neck shots

Not a fan of neck or head shots myself. I always imagine the deer is going to move that small target right as I'm squeezing the trigger-lol. I prefer a simple lung shot. Plus, I really hate to lose neck meat and would much rather waste a little rib meat. A large buck has a lot of good neck meat!

    Neck shots

You didn't mention the bullet brand or weight, but a lot of 45 cal bullets are fairy stubby pistol type bullets that have low sectional density. This type of bullet won't always penetrate well, especially if it expands and deflects off bone like yours. Normally, I would expect a heavy bullet to...

    New Side-By-Side UTV Thoughts?

I've only ridden in a 2 row Polaris a few times, but the ground clearance was pretty bad. Nearly got it high centered on a couple small mounds on flat ground. I wouldn't own one without at least some lift or bigger tires to increase the clearance.

    Is this the same deer?

It probably is the same deer, but the pictures in velvet make him look pretty old. The hard horn picture looks young

Yay, I can finally get on the site! Thank you!

    Thoughts on age?

Looks like 4 pedicles to me. Better take him early, before he breaks them off in the rut. Amazing deer!

    Native helps a Novice

Trees are looking good! I did the same with some nasty Callery pears in the pasture. Feels good to make something useful out of an invasive, and it's free! The other positive is the quick growth. Amazing how fast they go when pushed by a huge root system. Tried it with some name brand...

saw a herd of deer, missed, had a question

If you are new to hunting please don't shoot at running deer. Very low probability of a clean shot even if you are experienced. Lastly, you could have wounded or killed 3 or more deer. considering they were running in a group. It's not easy to find where the deer was when shot. You need to...

    Water Trees How Long?

You should be fine staying with once a week. I would keep watering until the ground freezes. It won't hurt anything and people don't realize how dry it can get in the fall. Last year I watered well into November since it was so dry. Year 2 and they are on their own ;)

    Deer and elderberry

The deer don't seem to browse my elderberry very much, but it's still a great plant. Good berries and it makes a nice thicket for small game and quail. Easy to propagate from cuttings too.

    Protein pellets ?

I wiped some wheel bearing grease about a foot off the ground, on the outside off the leg. Didn't want to get it up high where it would get all over the deer. It seemed to work very well because there wasn't a single picture of a coon on the feeder tubes this year.

    New Toy

I have the Ryobi 18 volt and it's great. I trim up a bunch of stands for public hunting and one 4 amp battery gets through most of the day. Of course, this is not continuous use. Surprised the 40 volt doesn't have better run time?

    Live from the stand 2021

Finally took a doe on the last day of the extended antlerless season, and got some good meat in the freezer. 27 yards with a 308 loaded with 152 Hammer Hunters and she didn't take a single step. Very thankful for a quick clean kill.

Rabbits etc. girdling trees w/ latex paint

Don't know why I didn't think of this. I make a powdered mix of habanero, garden salsa, and jalapeno that is used wherever I don't want critters. Works great, and have never had a packrat problem in ground blinds since sprinkling the powder around. We call it "death dust"
