Bo’s Hideaway

Today I didn’t feel like turkey hunting as it was wet and windy, so I went to the land to get some stuff done. With 5 days with over a 60% chance of rain starting tomorrow I decided to cut the rye that had gotten to about 4 foot tall and spread the green cover browse release and summer release. It’s supposed to act as a soil builder while also benefiting the wildlife. I haven’t purchased a cult I packer yet to knock it down as suggested but figured Bush hogging it high would have the same effect. The clover of the three different varieties seems to be doing well and needed a mow. It’s hard to tell which one is outshining the others but if I had to pick right now it’s looks like the Stratton seed revival is doing very well. Then me and dad broadcasted 60lbs of the browse release in the back plot, and 40lbs of the summer release and some left over dual season from Pennington in the front plot. I guess we will see what my results are.

Turkey season has unfortunately come to a close... which means it’s time to start fishing and get some of the small stuff done around the hideaway. This post is just a few of the pics I’m getting. The bucks are starting to put on growth and it seems we may have a familiar face back. It’s hard to tell in the pics but the body size of the deer on the left is way bigger than the rest of the deer showing up on the mineral site. This leads me to believe it may be the tall one back again. If so that would put this deer at 7-8. It looks like he may have some weird stuff going on around his bases.

I’m getting pics of turkeys and this bobcat as well, I think we may have to get rid of him this fall.

Well the clover I frost seeded by the dam is coming in very well, I over seeded it before a few days of rain with some comeback kid which is a clover alfalfa mix. I’m getting a lot of pics in the back food plot at all hours of the day. The bucks are starting to take off and nothing too exciting yet but I am interested to see if this is the tall buck I’ve had pics of the last 5 years. His body is enormous compared to the other bucks side by side.

I have been wanting to get a cultipacker but hadn’t jumped on one yet. Was about to place an order for a packermaxx when dad found this on the local marketplace. I guess it will work for what I want, atleast for now. 160$.

I also picked up 4 American plums and two strawberrybush from nativ nurseries. I decided to pot these so they can get ample water throughout the summer and will plant them this fall if all goes well.

And just some pics of the wildlife. Good to see some poults and fawns and the tall one is growing well.

I didn’t take any pics but also sprayed the areas with clover around the point with arrest max to try to kill the major grass issue I’m having. Hopefully it will do the trick, we will see.

People used to dump crap at the front of this piece before I owned it. I got all of that including a hot tub cleaned up right after I got it. I haven’t had anymore issues since. I stopped by on the way home from work this morning to see that some lowlife decided to back up to my cable gate and dump all their shit. Yes the lock in the pic is my cable gate. This is a small town, they better hope I don’t find out who did it.

Went by the hideaway today to do some work before going to work. Checked both food plots to see how the summer release blend was doing from green cover seeds. The front plot looked great but the back main plot was overrun with dog fennel and assorted other weeds. My dad was there and we mutually decided to bushhog the back plot to try to kill some of the competition for the clover. The next step is what I have to figure out. Should I try to put this completely in clover and chicory or go with the fall release blend in September like I had originally planned. There are several spots with good established clover and then areas where it is more sparse. It was suggested in another forum to just let it be for the summer and then do 10lbs per acre of Durana and 100lbs per ac of WR.

I like the last option best. Hard to beat winter rye when establishing a plot. Are you going to throw and mow or work ground?

Throw and mow, I think I am going to cultipack some soybeans in about September first just to get that candy started for bow season and then broadcast the fall release blend as well.

Soybeans are definitely deer candy, hopefully you can pick up some cheap leftover seeds from a local farmer.

I can get some for nothing, I’m best friends with one of the farmers around here. He already said he gonna have plenty just go get a 5 gallon bucket or 3 when I’m ready

Just a little photo update, not much to say as I’ve been trying to stay away, but we do have a familiar face back at the hideaway. He’s shown way more growth than any other deer I have. Hopefully this will be the year he decides to stay. This is the 5th year I’ve had pictures of him. Then I have another smaller buck that kinda looks like him, guess time will tell.Looks like a good fawning year as well.

Reminds me of a buck my dad chased for several years, a big six he named Weiner Sticks. lol

I’ve been after this one a while, he started as a big 11 pointer and was running with two other bucks we ended up killing that year. This deer has gradually gotten smaller every year but is still a trophy. I ain’t much on naming him but my lady friend refers to him as Fred

Finally got a little bit of a cooler day to go get a little bit done after work today. I needed to bushhog a little bit. I cut the weeds over some of the clover and checked the back food plot as well. Pretty happy with how the back food plot is looking.

Clover looks to be coming in pretty well on the edges. Ran the bushhog over these areas high to trim the little bit of weeds but overall pretty happy with how it looks.

The browse release from green cover seeds looks to be doing a pretty good job of keeping the weeds at bay. I have a little bit of dog fennel in this plot but nowhere near like it was. In the last picture of this group you can see a lot of the blend components. Sunn hemp, sorghum, cowpeas, buckwheat, and clover. Overall very happy with the results from this browse release. I will be ordering the fall release over the next couple days to get ready to plant that come Labor Day. Question… would you leave this stand and broadcast into it? Or would you broadcast then bushhog and cultipack it? Wish I had a drill but I do not.

This persimmon looks terrible, any ideas?

On the way home I noticed some equipment for sale on the side of the road. Stopped and looked at this swisher 44” pull behind mower… new they cost 2800$. Guy fired it right up so I asked what he wanted for it… 200$. Sold! I then saw the swisher walk behind string mower/weed eater. Asked about that… he fired it right up as well. Asked what he wanted for it… 50$. Be good for cleaning around my trees! Overall a pretty productive day.

Well after some playing with it I got this “new” 50$ swisher trim n mow running and went by the hideaway to run it around the trees I have planted in the front. Let’s just say that I don’t think they have ever looked this clean around them. Definitely satisfied with the 50$ spent!

And me and dad started the process of getting our stands hung after some maintenance. The three in my piece are now up. We went up the county to a piece on the hunt club and hung a few too. We were hanging the last one of the day, and dad was up in this one when we heard a weird noise, so he finished what he was doing and went to get down and noticed one of the two support cables had broken… thank god the other one held. He was up there another 10-15 min after we heard the noise.

Another eventful day, the bushhog I got with the tractor was getting borderline dangerous. The old Ford model had worn a hole through the deck and the stump jumper was all but gone. Picked this rebuilt bushhog from a guy dad used to work with for 200$. She cuts like a dream, and should get many years of use out of it.

Pretty much every time I think of my old man (passed in 2011) it involves hanging a stand. It’s the last thing we did together and he wouldn’t let me do much of anything. Great fun!!!

Yeah me and dad always hang them together unless I get a wild hair and want one somewhere when he isn’t around. He’s very particular, I put the sticks up and handle all that, then he goes up with a cable and pulley and we pull it up with that. I hold it and then he does his thing. He doesn’t trust the straps so each stand gets a stainless cable with a pad lock as an extra safety feature. When I put them up all they get is the strap… haha.
