Has anyone beat Johnson Grass?

I don't have it up by me, but I'm curious. I've never seen anyone claim victory over it. Is there a way, or is that ground just lost?

I was told by an extension agent that Outrider herbicide is very effective against Johnson grass, but I haven’t tried it yet.
I’m curious what others have to say as well

I find johnson grass easy to kill with gly. I can pretty well get a handle on it in my wheat fields I let go to seed with wheat in June and them spray them with gly a couple times in the summer to keep them clean for the doves to use - and then plant wheat again in the fall.

Hay farmers spread the seed from farm to farm with their mowers and bailers. My dad had zero Johnson Grass until he quit cutting his own hay and leased to to another person. Now it pops up at different places. It's easy to spot in the summer with the cool season grasses, so he goes around with a 3 gallon sprayer and sprays the spots with gly that are just starting. That gets it all, but then the next year, the hay farmer comes again, and the process has to be repeated.

My neighbor had the same thing happening to him, but he wasn't trying to stop the JG. His hay field came right up next to my NWSGs. So, I had to go around the edges every year and kill what was coming into my field from his field. But that problem is solved now - the neighbor started cropping his fields, and the double spraying of the crops each year eliminated the JG.

I had a field full of it. One summer (about 3 summers ago) I decided to disc the field up, wait about a 3-4 weeks and disc again and then do it again. No more Johnson grass.

Spray with plateau when it's little.Be sure and check with your county weed department, here we can buy at a discounted cost through them.

I went over to my son’s place yesterday and saw that he had a couple of big patches of it. I priced the Outrider and man are they proud of that stuff ! Napalm would be cheaper ! I’ll look up the Plateau but I bet it’s expensive too.

I just decided that I’ll hit that JG with gly and kill it, then turn it upside down this fall and winter to try and kill the ryzohmes. We’ll see……

I’ve had good success spraying 2-3 times with gly in one year to get rid of it before without disking.

Drycreek…Outrider is very high and will kill other grasses as well but it seems to take a couple of years of spraying to get rid of it. Check out MSMA, it is cheaper and more effective. It’s sprayed on Bermuda hay fields to get rid of several types of grass including Johnson Grass.

I’ve heard it was very expensive, also heard that a little bit goes a long way. I’ll be interested to see the rest of the feedback on here

Had an outbreak after planting EW, which is a waste of time and money in itself I found, another discussion. Didn't respond too much w spraying, but heavy WR planting and mowing JG before seeding rid it completely in two seasons.

Sprayed Plateau last year, weed wiping what's left this year with glyphosate. I have a roadside area that's the worst, so I believe that will always be a problem. The county mowers just spread more seed every year when they come by.
