Drought and Survival

I'll be up that way on Saturday to start working our fall plots. My grandfather and father have always told me the rain cuts off around July 4th in our area, and doesn't start back up until after Labor Day. So we try to line our planting up based on those dates, get the vacations approved, then pray for rain.

I use farmlogs app (free version) to keep a basic track of the rainfall. It currently shows that we are only 3.8% drier than normal - this isn't the full picture though because through May-ish we were like 35% wetter than normal for the year. Looking at both, we had a super wet spring, then summer hit and the spigot turned off. Crazy part - SW Missouri has almost 10 more inches of rain than I currently do along the Gulf Coast so far this year.

85% chance for rain and nothing, eastern OK looks to be getting a deluge, unless the radar is lying again. You getting anything Okie?

From about 8 pm last night until now as the rain is leaving we got 1”...very slow soaker type rain. Much appreciated but hopefully it doesn’t just germinate seed for the next long period of no rain...

I was hoping you got some, it bypassed us again. At least some of our brassicas germinated in the last week just to die, I'm not sure how much of it though. It looks like a complete failure, but who knows if we could ever get some real rain?

Still can’t figure out how this crap missed us yet again… We missed a 2.5” rain by 30 miles to south and then 30 miles to the east just to rub it in.

Missouri and Arkansas are doing really well and parts of Oklahoma…I am at our other farm dove hunting and we got 1/2” here…still dusty even…

Gonna go to extremes today Okie. We have a slight chance for isolated storms this afternoon, I’m gonna spray a plot. SURELY that will make it rain soon after!!!:D

Just about the time you get it all sprayed……

Didn’t work, but this is the farthest east plot we have, it has had 3x the rain as our farm. There’s no way I could spray anything at the Massey right now.

My corner of SWMO has been blessed the past week. Between planting my cereals on Saturday the 27th to now we have had 2 plus inches of rain. I dumped that 2 inches out on Thursday and we had rain almost all night and into Friday afternoon. I am praying for everyone to get some rain, This year the drought was pretty bad here, water holes that I have never had to fill had to get water trucked to them. Everything in the food plots were rough. Keeping my fingers and toes crossed that everyone can get some relief.

Just in case anyone hasn’t gotten the memo yet. We never get rain. Here’s another example from pics I just took in our backyard.

But wait you say, that rain is coming your way! You can hear the thunder!!! Nope, heading straight south. Right to the people who got 2”+ a couple days ago.

My goodness, they drastically changed the long term forecast. It is an absolute crappy outlook. I might not be planting plots until November. Still haven’t even thought about going and picking up seed.

That sounds about right Okie. Nothing doing up here at all. If the long term forecast is right, we must have big high pressure dome setting right on top of us. It looks like the umbrella that has been setting on top of us for 3 months is about to get a whole lot bigger. :(

Y’all are going to need a hurricane to come up through the gulf and head north. Sometimes that’s the only thing that can bust through the awful pattern you are stuck in.
