Son's 2016 rifle buck

I'm going to post these in my habitat thread but know that lots of folks don't have time to look at all the habitat threads.

This deer was 5 and maybe 6. I had lots of trail cam history on him, but he never came until December each year for the second rut. Last year he changed his pattern and followed one of my pet does into the farm during November gun season. Son and I were hunting together in the elevated blind and the rest is history.

Got him back this afternoon. Tax man fixed two broken tips, which added 3 inches. He said before the fix the gross score was 154 and was 157 after his repair.

That's awesome NH! The deer there must have some great genetics and it's a given they're very well fed!
Congrats on that one to the both of you!

Super buck. Great you had history with him. He must have got to thinking he was safe on Native's place.

That's a great deer there Native.....you and your boy should be proud of that! That's a great deer anywhere. Really cool you shared the hunt with your boy to boot.

Thanks J.

We did have some of the best fellowship last year that we've ever had hunting. Both of us were in the mood to just watch deer movement and talk about the different patterns we had seen over the last four years. It would have been a great year even if we hadn't seen one we wanted to harvest. I built the oversized blind with us being able to hunt together in mind. I don't make that many good decisions, but that was a good one. Seems we have started a yearly tradition that we both love.

We still don't want to shoot any does on this farm. But we do want to take one or two deer for meat early if possible. I am doing some planning where we might hunt my dad's place in early ML season for does and be back here in November for gun. But if I'm getting any daylight pics of a good one by ML season, we will change the plan and be back at old faithful.

I make all my shooting houses big enough for two.....they ain't roomy but they will work, just for that reason. I take my kids and we can sit there and just "be". They can fidget around, be out of the weather and have a good rest to shoot from. And every once in a while you share a really good hunt to boot. 2 years ago I was hunting with my son as he thought I had lost my mind going out in the pouring rain. I told him, the rain would stop and the deer would show. And like I had scripted a nice 130~140 buck stepped out. My boy would have never believed me if he wasn't there to see it himself. We have a good time just hanging out as well. My daughter get more impatient, but she is working on it. Like I said...great deer, better memories!

Amen! I really enjoy all of the family pics that you post. I think you have them hooked....;)

2 of them any way.....the 2 middle kids (both girls) I gave the opportunity to (they both took their hunters ed) but neither has really shown much interest in hunting. They still enjoy the outdoors and take pictures or the occasional fishing trip, but at least it's something. I figure as long as they appreciate nature in some capacity then I have done my job. They where both really helpful and involved with the squirrels, but that's sort of on the down low!

He's a 'good one' for most anywhere. REALLY good. Beautiful buck. Sounds like a great hunt with your son. Always enjoy seeing what you've got going on at your place.

Thanks Cedar. I enjoy both learning and sharing knowledge on habitat work. We all have a great thing going on with this forum, and I've got a lot of ideas for my place from multiple folks here.

Great buck! Nothing better than sharing the joys of hunting with our kids. My boys went from sitting on my lap on gun hunts when they were 5 years old to holding a gun themselves and sitting with me in buddy stands taking their first bucks, to now upping their standards every year bow hunting for trophy class animals. This year we are talking about adding a camera to the mix so we can actually share a tree together again like we did when they were younger.

Beautiful buck as well as mount. Thing I love about mounts is each time you look at the mount you are immediately taken back to the hunt. Congrats to your son. Pretty special that you were able to be with him.
