    Camera mounting setups

All of my cameras are mounted on a metal rod with a 1/4-20 bolt welded to the top. You dont have to worry about having a tree in the right place to mount the camera, can put in the middle of the field if you want to. Would be easy to weld another hanger to mount the solar panels on the same rod.

Opening the canopy - death to the Balsam?

I would hold off on the hemlock. Once they are gone they are not coming back. Where we hunt it seems like a deer trail runs under every hemlock tree. Any branch that falls to the ground from the wind seems to be browsed clean within a few days. With the loggers coming next winter there should be...

    Hunting and social media

I do find it ironic having this discussion on social media. We have lost almost 200,000 hunters and our deer kill is half of what it used to be 20 years ago yet areas of our state look like a pumpkin patch on opening weekend of our gun deer season. I am as guilty as anyone being on my phone...

    Old School U.P. Hunting Camps

They would put the legs up like that to drag them out. Pulled easy on the snow and weren't getting tangled in brush. It used to be common to leave them hang in the woods and pick up the last day. Had to put them up there before they froze. Not sure about hanging them by the antlers other than it...

    Old School U.P. Hunting Camps

I have been fortunate enough to have been invited to join a camp like that in northern WI. The camp began in the 30's and has been going ever since. It is always interesting to hear the stories from years past, many times the same stories are told every year. Last year there were 13 people in...

“Defensive baiting” mixed results BIG bear

Deer are typically built about the same based on age for body size and weight. There is some variance by regions but they are usually very similar. Bear tend to be more like people, some are longer and leaner, some are shorter and stubbier. Some will have longer heads. The other part that is...

“Defensive baiting” mixed results BIG bear

I've shot 14 bears in all sizes from 100 pounds to 500 plus and been part of over a hundred bear kills. If you ever think deer have ground shrinkage you have never shot a bear. A sow is going to look huge because they are very short. a 250 pound boar would likely make pope and young while a 350...

“Defensive baiting” mixed results BIG bear

To me it looks like a sow. Short body so the belly looks bigger. Small pointed nose, small feet, back end is bigger than the front end. Its a big sow, I would guess 250 to 275. Hard to tell though, pictures are very deceiving with bears especially with no reference in the picture.

    Yo no hablo ingles

Haven't heard of it happening. The wild ginseng is worth $500-600 per pound vs cultivated at less than $50. Not worth the effort to try to sell it vs getting caught. For experienced buyers it is very easy to tell the difference between the two. There are people around that pick wild up here but...

    Yo no hablo ingles

Central WI grows about 90% of the worlds cultivated ginseng. Looks like its about $20000 per acre to start out planting with no return for 3-4 years. Plus the fields need to be rotated after harvest. The field we bought once grew ginseng, they didn't flatten it out after harvest and it set...

black bear encounters on the ground

Having bear hunted a fair amount I can say that the bears climbing trees are not staged. Most of the time they see your shape and are curious what is in the tree. Same with tearing up ground blinds, they see something new and play with it. The best thing to do is move a little or say something...

    Keystone Krops

From the article it appears they want you to till the bean straw under to prevent the fungal infection. It also appears the fungus comes from the bean residue which would make you want to till it under.

You do realize that these flights are part of training exercises that they would be flying in different areas. The pilots must have a minimum number of flight hours each year to remain proficient.

    Free classes from Penn State!

Every time I try to add a course it will not let me. When I press the place order button after checking out nothing happens. Am I missing something or is there a lag time from when you set up an account and being able to register for classes?

    Deer corn

How is dumping out a pile of corn any different than clearing a section of the woods or other "natural" habitat and planting a food plot. How many tons of corn would have to be poured out to equal the cost of a tractor, implements, soil amendments, seed, and fuel to plant these plots. Neither...

Own your Own Whitetail land, but also go on guided, out of state hunts?

He has been kicked off of every forum that I am aware of. Some many times with alternate names. They all follow the same time frame. Starts out showing all of his projects, telling everyone how much he hunts and how everyone should be like him. If you disagree with what he writes he just proves...

    Electric Hoist for Deer Processing?

I have the harbor freight model of the champion above and it works great. With the warn model you have pictured you will need a ladder or step stool to raise it up high. The winch moves up and now or you have to hang the winch on the ceiling. Have used one in bear camp many times. It works but...
