Persimmons...how do I love thee...let me count the ways.....

I wish I had focused more on persimmons then apples. Also you don’t have to pick any certain cultivar to do well in your area. Just have to find different drop dates. I hope to plant some seeds this fall winter spring and hope to add more.

    Grafting 101

If you can get a limb close to the ground might be worth trying to layer it now. There are several methods too many to explain but you wouldn’t have to graft doing that might give both a shot.

    Deformed Graft

I agree that’s your best thing to do. Can you share the rootstock/scion combination? I think this same thing happens if you graft pecan onto hickories haven’t seen it myself but have seen it mentioned browsing the web...

    Rootstock top experimentation time!

window screen vs. hardware cloth vs. ?

I just started using window screen. I didn’t protect them until someone I know had their trees girdled. I bought a 100 ft roll by 36 in. I will cut that roll in half for a height of 18in. I’m considering cutting it into 12 sections. I don’t know how long I will cut them maybe 12 then fold over...

    Rambo Apple

Check out the temperate orchard conservancy their apple list has several rambos on it. Rambo, Rambo red, Rambo striped, Rambo summer, and Rambo winter. Might be worth emailing them and seeing if they know anymore information. If you graft they might have scions available next year.

    Lakngulf and Grafting...hmmmmmm

If those pears heal up you will get some nice growth after a year with a tree that big. Might want to keep an eye on them throughout the season they may grow too much for the union to support. Also don’t give up on them I bark grafted a tree about that size last year and I thought it had failed...

    Warm Weather Grafting?

I would go ahead and collect some scions now and wait to see how the weather does. I got a little ahead of myself last year because I thought I would be behind we had maybe one last cold snap and I think it hurt my grafts I had terrible success last year. I’m still fine tuning what I want to do...
