    Callery Pear Grafting

I just found a callery pear on the edge of our property yesterday. It’s about 3.5” in diameter. This caught me off guard, so I don’t have any scions ready. Our keifer pears haven’t broke into leaves yet, but they’re close. Buds are visible. Is it too late to harvest scion wood? I might have to...

    TSI after bud break?

There are a few trees that are a little too alike for a rookie like me to identify without the leaves. So, is it okay to girdle trees after they leaf out? I plan to do some tree removal in the next couple of weeks, but I'm planning to hold off on some of the girdling, if that's kosher. Some of...

    3 Gallon Air Pot

I really like the price of these 3 gallon pots. My only concern is the dimensions. They look to be 10" height and diameter. That doesn't seem like it would be 3 gallons; am I way off on that...

    High School Oak

We picked up some nuts off the ground under a young burr oak by the school parking. The tree is less than 12’ tall and the ground under it is COVERED. I plan to put some of these in the ground inside tubes sometime the couple of weeks. The de-capped nuts float tested good.

    Frost seeding chicory?

Looks like I threw our money away again this fall when it comes to chicory and clover. Can I frost seed chicory this-coming late winter? I’ve never tried to frost seed it with clover before.

    Fall Buckwheat Problem?

Just put up the haybale blind and took the first look at that plot since planting. I’ve done t&m into buckets without any problems. This is the first time I’ve worked the ground after mowing mature buckwheat. The plot is now LOADED with small buckwheat plants. They look to be dying down because...

    Buckwheat Partner

I plan on putting in about 2 acres of buckwheat next month. Since our clover is shot and we’ll be starting over this fall, is there an annual clover that can be planted for summer growth with buckwheat? Is the buckwheat so dominant that it would just be a waste of money? I would really like some...

    Beating Cool Season Grasses

Our plots are absolutely abysmal with the ongoing 2.5 year drought. I have not found one clover leaf in 5 acres of plots spread over 3 different properties. With the blank slate provided by the dead clover and the winter rye getting outcompeted in a couple plots, I now have an uphill climb that...

    Tree Watering Question

I received some tree watering instructions from Nature Hills Nursery in regards to our struggling Kousa Dogwoods. I was told when watering the trees to not allow the water to come into contact with the foliage, just the soil. Does anyone know the reason for this? I've never worried about water...

    Struggling Drop Tine Crabapple

This has been one of the best growing crabs we’ve planted to this point. I put it in the ground 2 years ago. The other 3, crossbow, and two 30-06 are all looking great with the 30-06 beginning to bloom. I watered them all last summer and fall in the drought, which we’re still in the middle of...

    Root Bound Trees

We have 3 trees, one hybrid burr oak of some kind that came from a tree in Dawna’s grandparents yard, and 2 chestnuts from Matt. All were started from seed last spring. 2 of them were planted in 1 gallon root maker pots. I transplanted them all into 5 gallon buckets yesterday. The two in the 1...

    Watering Trees in the Spring?

Have any of you ever been forced to water trees in the spring, and if so, when did you start?

    Nutsedge

Will clethodim do the job on nutsedge? I was told by the local extension office to spray now, he said to use glyphosate, but I’d rather not hurt the young clover in the plot.

    Water Trees How Long?

They are predicting the driest fall and winter in recent history, after the driest summer in decades. How late do I need to water trees? I stopped watering during the drought of ‘12 in September and lost 90% of our fruit trees. I don’t want to make that mistake again. How late do I have to...

    Brassica Fertilizer

I’ll be putting in a small 1/3 acre brassica plot tomorrow. I plan to put it in conventionally. My question is about fertilizer. I have a LOT of rabbit litter to use this fall, but might use urea, potash, and phosphorus instead (which I’ve always done in the past), since I’ll be following the...

    Kansas CWD

There is quite a bit of hoopla right now in Kansas. The wildlife commissioners recently have begun talking about attempting to combat CWD. Their talks include a possible bait ban beginning in 2023. I don’t know what this means for foodplots, I’m assuming they would remain legal, but who knows...
