    Dissolving WDGs

I'm starting to spray more herbicides in WDG (wettable disbursable granules) form. How long should I expect it to take them to dissolve. I'll generally pour them into a bucket with some water, and stir vigorously, before pouring into the tank of the boom sprayers or backpack sprayers. (Only one...

    Pond overflow 12" PVC pipe

My dad recent dug the small pond at our camp deeper. As part of the process, he was able to raise the bank some on the low side. Now that the bank is higher, the overflow pipe is too low. We need to raise the overflow about 12", with roughly 6" of overlap on the existing pipe. Does anyone have...

    Crossbow restringing recommendations

I'm new to crossbow hunting. I hunt the PA inline bear season, which overlaps with archery. I carry both the inline and crossbow. I picked up a Ravin R10 two summers ago. When shooting it last fall, it seemed like it lost a little velocity. (Couldn't confirm with my LabRadar, because I...

    Moss in clover

Some of our clover plots stay fairly wet over the fall/winter months. This tends to cause some moss growth. The pH had been bad for years, but has been corrected for about 2 years. Is there anything we can do(spray?) to kill the moss without harming the clover? Hoping the clover takes...

    Corn Variety Recommendations

Does anyone have any recommendations when it comes to selecting a corn variety for wildlife? Corn will be planted in 17771. pH is right around 7. It will be efenced, and drilled into crimped rye. Since the plot will be less than an acre, will likely plant with higher than recommended population.

    Buck's Unlimited Oak Acorns?

Anyone out there with any acorns from the Missouri HARC trees that Forest Keeling Nursery has exclusive distribution rights to? They've named it "Buck's Unlimited Oak. They produce acorns in 2-3 years. The trees are only sold in 3 gallon containers, which they only ship on pallets. Forest...

    High deer density seeding rates

It's about time to drill our fall food plots. Our area tends to be on the higher send of deer density in north central PA. We're going to go with a mix of rye/wheat/oats with a bit of bucketwheat and brassicas mixed in for diversity. Historically when we're planted cereal grains, they pretty...

    Pond "muck" as organic matter?

Dad is about to dig out our small pond. (renting an excavator) There's a fair amount of "muck" in it. Two large floods over the last 5-10 years have deposited run off into the pond. Does anyone have any thoughts on if there is significant amounts of organic matter in this stuff? Could it make...

    Shelterwood cut experiences and questions

We had a forestry management plan put together by a PA state forestor around 2009. The plan calls for a shelterwood cut between 2019-2025. The property is 150 acres, mostly wooded. We're starting to get serious about making it happen. I'm curious what folks have done to prep for these types of...

    Soil test confusion help

Last spring, we applied lime to most of our food plots based on previous soil test results. We retested two weeks ago to see how things look now. They're looking a lot better, but there was one confusing piece of information. Two plots a few hundred yards apart both tested at a pH of 6.3. One...

    Camera mounting setups

I'm curious how the community is mounting their trail cams. Most of ours are on stakes in the ground with a small board attached, and the cams are attached using flexible ties or small bunnies. This works well, but we have added a bunch of solar panels. They've been left on the ground, which...

    Group seed order coordination forum?

Green Cover Seed has recently suggested folks find local groups of people to combine orders to save on shipping costs. Their prices reflect built in shipping costs with discounts for larger quantities. Unfortunately, they don't offer a mechanism to help find other people local to you. I managed...

Agricultural Deer Control Program - CLOSE to camp

We recently found out a property about 2 properties over (3/4 mile at closest point) was enrolled in the PA Red Tag Program (pa.gov) this summer, and shot 26 does. (via what a neighbor "heard") The old timers in camp seem to be disappointed by this, thinking it's going to badly influence the...

    Pot raising trees

Has anyone bought bare root trees/seedlings and raised them in pots for a year? How did it go? I'm going to try about 25 trees this summer in 3 gallon Rootmaker bags and pots. I'll be using ProMix BX55 potting mix, and I'll fertilize them with Oscomote. Maybe a few foliar spray too, when I hit...

Green Cover Seed SE PA Group Order?

Anyone interested in sharing shipping costs for a pallet from Green Cover Seed in SE PA. They're a big name in cover crops. We've moved our plots to no-till, and want to run their mixes this year. Our plan is below. I'm likely going to order by the end of the month. Spring - cool season soil...

Deer and Honey Locust in the north

Does anyone know if deer will eat honey locust pods in the north? 6a/6b I'm considering trying to start some Hershey and/or Calhoun, as I'm close to the original Hershey orchard, so the seeds will be free. They seem to grow fast and drop a lot of pods. I read deer love them in the south, but...
