    rattling/grunting

This^^ Bucks will attempt to scent check the "bucks" that are fighting so the set-up is important. And bucks need to be in the proper "mood" to respond. I've had a specific buck ignore rattling on one day and then have him respond the very next day.

How rare is this size buck? I'm not a hunter but ran into it in east PA woods

Not rare at all in this part of PA. It's hard to score a buck from just one frontal pic but I would be surprised if he breaks the upper teens. If he's 2.5, he's a solid 2 year old. If he's 3.5, he could still blossom into a great buck. If he's 4.5, he's behind the curve. Not that he can't still...

    posting pics

I use Tapatalk but it's guaranteed that the 1st four or more attempts will get "upload failed". Usually by the 5th try the pic goes thru. And once the 1st pic finally loads then all subsequent pics will load 1st try without a fail. It's to the point that I dont wait for the error message. As the...

    Deer Battle Wound?

I believe it's a brain abscess. Several year ago I shot one with a bit of puss oozing from the pedecls, bit not quite as nad ad the OPs buck. That same week a neighbor 2 doors down shot one woth an abscess. I got a little freaked out thinking it was CWD so I contacted a biologist at the game...

    Who smokes their clothes?

I use ozone on my gear, too. But I suspect that the main benefit of smoke is as an odor PREVENTATIVE because it inhibits bacterial growth. Ozone works fantastic to destroy odors but O3 is very volatile...once it dissapates, I doubt it continues to help reduce idors.

    Yep, leaves are good too.

    Who smokes their clothes?

I think pine needles would br better than pine pitch. I occasionally use a little piece of pine pitch in my wood stove and it leaves a tough coating where it melts and drips onto my ash pan. Pitch mighy start gunking up the bottom of the bee smoker?? IDK. Hey maybe that residue may actually be...

    Who smokes their clothes?

That's what I use. I gave a gallon size zip lock stuffed with white pine needles. A hand full in the bee smoker smokes for a few minutes...long enough to smoke body as I dress and also all of my gear for the day. I did read on a bee keeper's site about "clean smoke". Some people use stuff that...

    Who smokes their clothes?

I started doing it last year. I already employ a lot of odor reduction and I've had great results for years now but there's always room for improvement so I bought a bee smoker. I don't believe just one season is enough time to form conclusions but I do know that deer smell bacterial odors and...

    Name these berries

Pics can be deceiving but it kinda looks like cherry to me, but it also looks a little like poke. We have a few other dark colored berries growing around here. Cherry is one of our most dependable mast producers. Seems like every chery tree makes cherries every year.

    Name these berries

Maybe Black cherries?? My deer hammer those. I've had deer eating them under my tree in pitch dark. The only reason I knew there were deer under me was the sound of the pit being crunched by deer teeth.

    Cedar tree stand setup ideas

I'm curious why you cut so many of the lower branches. Seems like they wouldn't be an issue with a ladder stand. I try to cut as little as possible. But it's a cedar, so within a year or 2 that cover will be growing back.

    Hickory nuts and deer preference...thoughts?

I have a yard full of shagbark. Several years ago I watched a young buck try to eat hickory nuts but the nut kept slipping from between his teeth, but he kept on trying. That convinced me that deer can't eat hickory nuts. But last year I saw what looked like a deer swallowing hickory nuts...not...

    What is this

I've watched deer targeting spicebush. I used to have a video I took of does hammering the leaves as they yellowed in October. I have no problem with the stuff. Better that privet, Bush Honeysuckle or a dozen others.

Clearing land and laying out new food plots. Advice on where to begin

I would cut any trees high for 2 reasons. 1) if you try to push the stumps out, a high stump will give you leverage. 2) short stumps hide in new growth. If you come back to mow or till/disk, youre gonna find stumps the hard way.

Clearing land and laying out new food plots. Advice on where to begin

I'll add this... If you aren't already skilled at plant identification then you need to get learned-up. When you open up the area and when you disturb the seed bank in the soil, you're gonna awaken a bunch of new plants. Some may be no issue or even desirable. But there will also be some...

    Favorite Tree Order Companies

Question: Is it important to try to order trees from nurseries located in (or close) to your zone? In my case zone 6B. Is there a better survival rate or growth/production rate if trees are started and grown relatively close to the same region?

    ANOTHER DRY YEAR?

Yep. Just about the time I hit "send" on my earlier post it started to rain. By the time it was done 5 hours later, my rain gage said 1.25". Wonderful. Sent from my SM-G970U using Tapatalk

    ANOTHER DRY YEAR?

I feel your pain here in SW PA. Its been a strange spring...Drier than normal in March, then we had decent moisture in April, and now May is back to the dry pattern. In 2020 it went from winter to rain almost daily until July, then it shut off for the rest of the summer. I cant remember the...
