FYI-The Missouri Dept of Conservation is open for online tree orders starting today.

I told my wife that I'd hold back and plant fewer trees than last year, but spend more time and tube or fabric each one. Ha, that didn't last long. So addicting that I just couldn't stop, so I ended up ordering 150 trees and shrubs. I'll probably tube around 20, fabric the shrubs and randomly stick the rest in the ground and hope for the best.

Ordered a dibble bar from Amazon too, as last year about killed me.

Just got 50 Chinese chestnuts in the mail from wpbdeer too, so it looks like a busy winter!

Only 150? Lightweight..... :p
I noticed they werent selling red cedars this year??? Man i wanted to pick up a couple hundred too.

Hmmm. Last year I ordered 25 red cedars and had terrible luck with them. They looked awesome but only had a handful survive and the others just turned brown within a few weeks, even when being babied. Figured I let the roots dry out or something since they were the last ones planted, but maybe not?

Ive had it both ways with red cedar. And from multiple sources. Last year from MDC looks to be pretty good success from what ive seen. Year before they looked great at planting and were toast a month later.
And ive not been happy with their pitchXlob pines two years running now.
Digging and transplanting my own cedars is almost 100% success though.

I had good luck with their pitch-loblolly last year. The only problem I had was with deer pulling them out of the ground.

Agree about the transplanting cedars. Had a 100% survival rate on the few that were transplanted.

I know these are a more expensive but I've good luck with red cedar plugs from NCR.

Thanks for the link. I may very well be headed there.
I bought 200 red cedars from Musser Forest a few years back and they were dead pretty quick too. And i took all the care with them that i do all seedlings.

I wish you were closer. My dad would probably pay you to come dig up a couple hundred red cedar. They are all going to get torched next spring... :(

I have had the best luck with the MDC's red pine and swamp oak. Their red pine have been easily the nicest I have received from the 6 different nurseries I have ordered from.

Side note: Gravel road - awesome profile photo! Any chance you'd share any others from that burn?

I was on their website just now. They are listed as E Red Cedar. Better get to ordering!

I didn't know folks planted cedars. If you can make it to northeast Missouri next spring I will let you dig up as many as you want before I light them on FIRE! I will throw in a dozen free autumn olives with every cedar.:D

Yes, i am a red cedar planter.
Absolutely the best deer cover i have seen. Growing where you dont want them is another issue.
I too wish i lived closer to you guys. Ive transplanted so many i am running out of places to look.

Im good on the olives. :D

Just checked and by gosh they are there. Maybe i am crazy, but i checked and rechecked the other day and they werent there.
Thank you T-Max!

I general I have had poor luck with the eastern redcedar from MDC also. Mainly those only 8-10" tall. I got a batch one year that were about 20-24" tall and had great luck with them. Recently I have been digging them from other land with a large rootball and transplanting them with good luck. I use them for screening.
