My Central Ky Habitat Addiction

Not much going on here. I did freshen up my mineral sites this week and through some protein blocks out that my buddy is selling to see how they last.

Have decided to start a protein feeding program and decided to make my own 17.5 % mix.

I put the cameras back out to see what was hanging around and see how they use the new feed & blocks, checked today and had a pretty cool find

Cool pic of albino. I used to hunt a property with a good genetic pool of white. I actually have a piebald buck I shot on the property years ago. All I could see coming thru the brush were its white boots/legs. Keep us posted on your blocks and protein mix. I'm guessing you have no bears as mine would empty that in a minute.

Looks like a great fall there! Albinos are always cool. Looks like a very small deer. Youve not seen it before?

Deer is def small. We have never seen it before but I have not have cameras out for about a month so don't know how long or often it is around

I would rather have a piebald, I think they are much prettier. No bears here, yet!!

Congrats on all the success this year! Very cool pic. Also interested in hearing what's in the mix and a better picture of what you are feeding out of.

I have two boss buck feeders with the protein head. I'd like to make a couple feeders myself.

This is my first test on the feed mix , not gonna say what's in it yet until I verify they will like it. Will post a list up toward the end of the week.

Our feeders we make out of metal barrels.
- beat the bottom out some to cone feed downward.
- cut out and install a toilet flange
- add drop pipe, " T" and extensions
- weld on leg brackets & install legs.

Sounds good thanks!!

This is my final mix for my 12% starter feed. Will ramp up to 17.5% protein after the deer hopefully take to the current mix.

Main ingredients are corn, oats, wheat, sunflower, dried molasses. Will us a high protein pellet to increase protein as desired.

I quit mixing sunflower seeds in my feed because it attracted so many birds and they'd knock the food outta the feeder to get to the seeds so bad. I'd have 20lbs of feed out of each 80lb feeder every day.

WELL I HAVE BEEN AWAY FOR A WHILE, LARGELY BC MY PHONE WONT COPY AND PASTE PICTURE LINKS ANYMORE?!?!

Im gonna give a quick update and post a bunch of pictures.

- As far as the custom mixed feed, it was a FAIL!! Deer preferthe straight corn and not all the extras. Going forward I am feeding straight corn with a 40% protein pellet mixed to get my corn up to 18%-20%!!!

As for whats new?!?!

Well my biggest project going on is the final approval of another larger tree planting. This one will be through the USDA CP-22 Riparian Buffer Program as I discussed before. Will be planting almost 6000 trees on 10 acres of bottom crop ground into white oaks, red oaks, walnuts, pecans, dogwoods, mulberries, and probably throw a couple hundred each of pears and crab apples.

And my favorite pic so far for 2017!!!!

Some random wildlife pics. Starting to see bigger groups and more species than ever before!! I feel like my dedication to habit improvement including native foods & LOTS of cover are paying off.

My first and only hinge cuts to add a little food and small game cover/nesting. Plan on doing a lot more of it this year:

The youth group, Taking Kids Outdoors that I am a big part of hosted our annual Youth Beard Bash Turkey Hunt. We had over 30 kids at our camp and harvested around 15 birds

Most notable were these two first off my property!!

My son harvested his first bird:

And another young mans first bird:

Added a little extra touch to my farm sign:

And received Forest Stewardship nomination & approval through the forestry dept which I hope my kids will build off of.

And am currently in the process of planting these mulberry seedlings and expanding my blackberry & blueberry orchard!!!
