Clothes pins work great for branch angle training! I'm just not used to those fancy looking things you have
Gator, those are "Calvin Clone" designer pins.
I've read how important cultural practices are for apples, so I want to start these out right...

You know I don't care about turkey hunting much, but it was a good day today. I called in 6 gobblers, put the bead on only one at 11. Was getting nothing till I switched to a new box call someone got me that hurt my ears is was so high pitched. But they loved it over the slate for sure. We can only hunt till noon here.Mt first turkey hunt got train wrecked by a pack of dogs running deer, but at least I didn't come home empty handed. This is from the new small property I recently bought.
My banana crop looks good this year.
Food plot coming to life.
Northern Whitetail Crabs coming to life.
Snakes coming to life.
Someone forgot to tell the Golden Hornets that they aren't recommended by UK for our state.
An old dog can learn new tricks. Training new apple branches with clothes pins.
A little beauty.
Hope it isn't raining in the morning. Might be my last chance to turkey hunt. Saturday is forecasted to be a downpour and I'm on the road again next week.
About those clothes pins, do you farm in your suit Eddie Albert? I'm sure some have no idea what I'm talking about.

Of course I know what you're talking about. I hired Alf and Ralph to help me with the shed roof.

Thanks Lak. Yep, my wife thinks I'm a fruit cake....
I must have hit the apple topworking at a good time. I grafted over 40 scions and only see 1 that hasn't taken. Hoping the persimmon do that well but still waiting on them.

Seriously, I have come to develop a great appreciation for the cold temps that my northern habitat brothers have to endure.
It's hard to believe, but I have one apple variety (Margret) that will be ripe about 40 days from now. It's a tart little booger, but my son really likes the taste of them.
Just last night the weeping mulberries had fruit to start ripening. These will taste good until the Illinois Everbearing start ripening in a few days, and then both me and the birds will forget about the early ones. The early ones are good but the IEs are even better.

It had 14 grafts on this one tree and 13 of them now have leaves. The last one has green tips.
The grafts consisted of two wild apples, a nice wild summer crabapple, some Arkansas Black, Priscilla and possible another one or two. I got a little wild myself and didn't keep notes on this one.

This is one of the Northern Whitetail Crabs I set this year. All 5 are taking off super nice.

This is the Franklin Cider Apple I set this spring:
This is briers 4 days after Remedy Ultra.
The grafts consisted of two wild apples, a nice wild summer crabapple, some Arkansas Black, Priscilla and possible another one or two. I got a little wild myself and didn't keep notes on this one.

Great grafting Job Native! It's hard to imagine those old dried out looking twigs have been transformed into such beautifully growing new "branches". It looks like fun and maybe next season I'll give it a try. By then Chummer will have the grafting down pat and he'll maybe train me a little.
