Elk Meadow Farm

Daughter and I had a rough closing day saturday. Hens were out feeding as well as the ticks but we didn't see or hear one gobbler.

When they are done, they are done. Would like to see an earlier season in the future.

Ours must not be done...I went over to check on some cameras Sunday evening about 6:30 and walked right up on 3 strutting longbeards while I was wearing a red shirt. They let me get to 30 yards in the wide open plot...hens left quickly and gobblers dallied...

Spent mothers day with my wife Sheila and my dad Art putting in 4 acres of food plots. We planted 2.5 acres of soybeans and 1.5 acres of black oil sunflowers. Top of my legs are sunburned.

Went to the property yesterday and wanted to till and plant sorghum but it was too wet to till. Mowed 2.5 acres of chickory and clover. Mowed it at 8". 2 weeks after planting sunflowers and soybeans I have good germination.

Plots look great. I had a pair of jeans on at the farm with a rip in the right knee. My right knee cap was sunburnt after planting soybeans.

Its getting pretty hot here now. Highs near 90 and I am so happy my plots are done. Seat time on the tractor will definitely burn you without a canopy. If I did this for a living I would have an air conditioned cab. Getting rain right now at the farm. Should see some germination next weekend on the plots I planted Friday.

This weeks trip to the farm was productive. We planted and caged the 2 Dunstan chestnuts I picked up at Walmart. The Shore Klear I sprayed on the pond to kill the water shield worked just fine. Next week I will spray the remainder from the boat I could not reach from shore. The milo plot I planted 2 weeks ago has germinated and is growing fine. The beans look a little thinner than I expected and the sunflowers are about 10" tall. The loggers are still at it and are about 75% done. My wife planted a pumpkin/watermelon patch 2 weeks ago and they growing too. Got lots of pics on the cameras.

The seed tag was labeled forage sorghum. I got it from NWTF for $10 for 50#. I have quail so I was hoping they would benefit from it. If it does act as a screen that would be a bonus. I think it will grow like milo

Eradicated the invasive musk thistle in my field. Only had 8 plants. We bagged them and tied them off and cut them at their base and put tordon on their stumps. Hopefully that will be their end.

Hope that takes care of the thistle. Growing up I hoed A lot of thistle. If there was no work for us boys my dad could always find some thistle. Seems folks let it go wild these days!
