Stone Branch, build it, they will come.

Trying to get some more trees dead before the sap starts flowing again.

A couple of big trees that I double girdled a few years back.

A youtube deer/habitat expert told me that deer don't bed on slopes.

I finished up the lower slopes, sap will be flowing today so the saw comes back out.

Yep, the sap is flowing.

I have been looking forward to redecorating this spot for a long time. An overstory of red maple with a tulip poplar and maple understory. Looking up to my east property line. I hacked the smaller stuff then went in yesterday and dropped the maple overstory.

G, I have noticed in your pics that you are often sawing the trees once they are on the ground. I'm sure you have a purpose for doing this?

big well placed felled trees I often leave in one piece. I piece out a lot of smaller trees to get on the ground and minimize clutter. I piece out around skid and deer trails. The other day I dropped half a dozen trees over the main skidder trail up and down and made more cutting for myself. Any trees that get hung up in another tree get pieced out from the bottom up until they come down. I want to make some cover without blocking movement too much.

Another area that I went through with the hack hammer first.

I left a tall/straight red maple standing. There are a few nice oaks on this hill side, but most are big and bent. Lots of mountain laurel and leaf litter to carry a hot fire. This will be my oak savanna.

A nice little stand of white oaks at the top.

I hurt some red maples yesterday.

This tree looked to be inhabited so I choose to girdle and as I was doing so a squirrel ran out.

West facing slope, about 2/3rds of the canopy was red maple. I will hack and squirt most everything else, tulips, that isn't an oak.

Morning walk, I got caught up with the hack hammer.

More clean up with the saw for the afternoon shift.

I cut the maples pretty hard and hacked tulips in the area leaving behind a bit of a mess, for the most part, I'm just going to let the deer figure it out for themselves.

IMG_2094 (1200 x 900).jpg

IMG_2106 (1200 x 1030).jpg

The area will receive some good afternoon summer sun.

IMG_2105 (1200 x 803).jpg

I'm now wrapped all the way around under my rim trail to a previous cut

Now, I have left, the little bump out area on the south end of unit B, less than an acre on top of the plateau.

Straight down the hard edge, cut right and woods interior left.

Maples falling in, are being processed into tree tops and fire wood.

I was able to convince a couple of maples to fall out away from the sun.
