Stone Branch, build it, they will come.

I actually paid some attention to my food plots this year, I mowed, sprayed, and sprinkled some wheat, cover, and radish. I mostly see ragweed and wheat.

The thought occurred to me yesterday while I was at work killing trees, "I sure do like my job".

My new chest holster, I got a good molding first attempt.

Careful with those poplar boards. They’ll rot within a year, even if painted, if left outside. Dig the holster. Might have to try making one.

Time will tell on the poplar boards. I was ready to make the holster harness out of an elastic band belt and one suspender off of an old pair of Orvis waders but I put the brakes on and ordered a harness off of Amazon for $63 with tax and free shipping.

So what can fire accomplish? When I ran the first fire through this area it was a stunted forest choked out by ash trees

DSC06032 (1200 x 800).jpg

now it is a white oak and persimmon groove now fruiting for the first time after the second fire this past spring.

DSC07841 (1200 x 800).jpg

I had to hit the brakes yesterday for persimmon fruits laying in the two track. I looked up to find more persimmons.

With all of the mast hitting the ground this year this is a good indication how fast the deer are eating up the corn.

Those are some good looking persimmons.

At the current time, unless you are near a white oak tree you will be in a deer desert around my place. All other mast means nothing right now - including corn. It is indeed a bumper year for white oak. But all that will change as they get eaten and rot away. About the time that happens, the Swamp Chestnut oaks (also highly sought after) should kick in. This is a good year for them too. They will be prime hunting spots in November.

PS - you already know this, but in a year of low white oak production, those persimmon trees will be worth their weight in gold.

Those red dots make all the difference on a pistol. I put one on the 10 mm glock I bought, I would say I could kill a deer at 75 y pretty easy. I just haven't attempted it yet! Place is looking good.

My stand with the clump of white oaks is going to be occupied for the first time this evening.

Check this, persimmon on the left and giant white oak on the right side of the path.

Green dot in this case, I was in need of something that I can practice with and actually hit something with, coyote. I missed two red squirrels up at the horse farm in Michigan.

I got back yesterday to find my harness waiting for me and I just fabed up the holster and put it together.

I'm ready just haven't had any customers yet.

Yesterday was my first sit in the Amphitheater of Hunting stand

IMG_0871 (1200 x 900).jpg

over looking a clump of white oaks. No more acorns raining down, I heard one drop.

IMG_0870 (1200 x 900).jpg

A couple of does moved up through the area without stopping at the oaks.

The time on this camera is an hour fast.

The 8 pt relates well to the new intersection

IMG_0038 (1301 x 732).jpg

as does Goofy.

IMG_0023 (1300 x 731).jpg

I looked at this picture and said 8pt but something didn't look right.

IMG_0028 (1300 x 731).jpg

and I was right. It was my biggest boy making a return visit. He is 8 years old now

IMG_0085 (1300 x 731).jpg

2 years ago he maxed out as a big 10, last year a 9, this year he is an 8pt.

Looking good G. That first pic looks like you should be setting on the border of Gaza.

I sat down in the ditch yesterday evening, when the wind calmed down, I wished that I was up top. Goofy didn't show.

I've been trying to find a deer without success.

We were working our way up the ditch yesterday morning and while I was down waiting on Forester Bill to take a tally, a message pinged in, "Goofy's dead"

Further up the slope at the next tally point

West Virginia killed him, RIP Goofy. I hand scored him 52 inches net.

The old 8 has got the hunters next door pretty worked up. The photo was taken not too far off my north line. I'm heading for a stand before they start heading in this am.

Hauling the mail down. I got down and was hanging out and heard his death bawl loud and clear, dog leg left. I figured that he would be down there towards the cabin plot. Blood trail was decent, nothing to write home about. He went down then back up the other side, damn.

IMG_0944 (1200 x 900).jpg

He went half way up before his last 30 yards back down. 323 yards, 200' down and 100' back up.

IMG_0948 (1200 x 900).jpg

The hit looked high and back but it was a steep angle down, quartering away. The exit was just behind his opposite leg. 2 lungs and no poo poo.

DSC07950 (1200 x 800).jpg

I hit him up there and across in the Kill Zone.

DSC07953 (1200 x 800).jpg

I busted out my Kifaru pack, plastic, and game bags from Colorado. I took his legs off and packed him out in 2 loads. 500 yards to the freezer where he is still cooling down. I took my wrong camera back in for hero shots but it was warm and I had no time to waste any way. So this will have to do for my hero shot.
