Haven’t seen anything quite like this before. They built it in such a random unprotected spot. Any of you bee guys have a theory of what they were thinking. Guessing a swarm built it and moved on to better accommodations?IMG_0794.JPGIMG_0796.JPG

It looks like it was in a big hollow branch, then the branch broke off. They probably abandoned ship soon after.

My thinking is along with cutman. I suspect it was protected at one point and then things changed and they may have continued for some time after that, but eventually moved on. Very unique to say the least!

Very interesting. I've seen them fill a hollow tree then build honeycomb around the entrance on the outside. Or, maybe the Queen Bee was a socialist who said "you can trust me to do the right thing for the people".

I have an old blackjack oak near my pond that had bees in it that I didn’t know about. It also had a limb that grew down like blackjacks do that scraped my tractor cab each time I mowed. So, one day I’m over there with my backhoe, Sarge is riding with me, and I have the brilliant idea to just break that limb off. I set up on my stabilizers, brakes locked, front bucket on the ground and reached up and broke that sucker off. Man alive, those bees came out and eat me alive ! By the time I got my stabilizers up, brakes unlocked, in gear, bucket up, they had stung me 24 times. I looked at Sarge once and they had him covered up but I think his hair was too long for them to sting him. To top it all off, I’m on an incline and when I turned my wheels too sharp with all the weight on the down hill front tire it came away from the rim and lost all its air. We had to jump off and hoof it ! Even an experienced operator sometimes does stupid stuff !:mad:o_O

Makes mowing over a hornets nest sound fun by comparison. 24 times would have anyone a little woozy!!!

I think they were social distancing as building within the confines of the tree would have created increase germ transmission.
The queen shut down their workplaces inside the tree, so they started working outside instead. That's what we're soon going to do. Maybe go to Nicaragua to work, everything is wide open there. WHO is screaming to them about the dangers of this. Total of 9 people sick and 1 death so far.
